How NIL Valuations Are Calculated: The Bottom-Up Model, Explained
An NIL valuation estimates what a college athlete's name, image and likeness rights are worth on the open market. termiNIL calculates it bottom-up: a position base rate is multiplied by role, an SOS-adjusted production grade, a team multiplier, a market multiplier and a social-reach multiplier. Ask three outlets what a college quarterback is worth and you will get three numbers that differ by a factor of four. That is not because NIL is unknowable. It is because most published valuations are not built the same way, and several are not really built at all.
This is what a valuation model actually has to do, and how termiNIL does it.
What is an NIL valuation, really?
It is an appraisal. The right mental model is a house, not a paycheck.
Nobody knows what your neighbor's house sold for until it sells, and even then the price reflects one buyer on one day. An appraiser does not wait for the sale — they price the house from its own attributes and from what comparable houses trade for. An NIL valuation does the same for an athlete: it estimates what the market would pay, from observable inputs, whether or not a deal has been signed.
This distinction matters because it explains the single most common complaint about valuation models: "that number is wrong, I heard he actually got X." A reported deal and a valuation are different objects. One is an anecdote about a transaction. The other is a price.
Top-down vs bottom-up: why the direction matters
Top-down starts at the program. Estimate what a school's collective and revenue-share pool spends in a year, then divide that budget among the roster by importance. It is fast and it produces sane-looking team totals.
It also inherits one enormous flaw: every player's number depends on a single number nobody has verified. If the budget estimate for a program is off by 30% — and program budgets are among the least reliable figures in the sport — then every player on that roster is off by 30%, in the same direction, at once.
Bottom-up starts at the player. Build each valuation from that player's own position, role, production and reach, then aggregate upward and check the totals against what is known about market size. Errors in individual inputs are independent, so they partly cancel across a roster instead of compounding.

The six factors
Every termiNIL valuation is a product of six terms. They multiply rather than add, because these effects genuinely compound — a starting quarterback at a blue blood is not "starter plus blue blood," he is starter times blue blood.
1. Position base
Positions are not interchangeable, and the market prices them very differently. The base rate reflects how much NIL value a position commands before anything about the individual is known.

2. Role
Where a player sits on the depth chart. A backup quarterback and a starting quarterback share a position base and almost nothing else. Role is the single largest source of variance inside a position group — larger, in most cases, than the difference between a good starter and a great one.
3. Production grade
A 0–100 grade built from on-field production and adjusted for strength of schedule. The adjustment is not cosmetic: 300 snaps against SEC defenses and 300 snaps against Sun Belt defenses are not the same evidence, and a model that treats them identically will systematically overprice Group of Five production.
4. Team
Program revenue, brand reach and market size. This term is why the same player is worth more at Ohio State than at Kent State — not because he is better there, but because the pool of money competing for him is deeper and the exposure that drives third-party deals is larger.
5. Market
A broad multiplier that scales the whole board as the market itself moves. When the revenue-share cap rises or collective spending contracts, this is the term that moves — which keeps the model current without re-deriving every player's inputs.
6. Social reach
Combined following across X, Instagram and TikTok. This is the factor people assume dominates, and it does not. In practice it operates as roughly a 0.9x–1.3x multiplier on a value that has already been established by the first five terms.
The evidence is in the top of the board. The most valuable player in the sport has under a third of the following of the second-most valuable. A player with 12,237 followers ranks 17th nationally. Reach amplifies; it does not create.
Why pricing all 14,094 players matters
A model that publishes 200 valuations has not solved the problem — it has picked the 200 easiest cases and skipped the rest.
Coverage is what makes numbers comparable. When every one of the 14,094 players on all 138 FBS rosters runs through identical arithmetic, the value of a third-string safety at Toledo is genuinely comparable to the value of a starting receiver at Georgia. You can sum a roster. You can compare position groups across conferences. You can measure what a transfer is worth to the team acquiring him versus the team losing him.
You can do none of that with a leaderboard of famous names.
For scale: the full FBS market prices at $3.00 billion, the median player is worth $72,000, and only 501 players clear $1 million.
What a valuation model cannot do
Honesty about the limits is part of the method.
- It cannot see private terms. Contracts are confidential and inconsistently disclosed. Any product claiming to report actual compensation for thousands of athletes is not reporting; it is estimating and mislabeling it.
- It cannot price a one-off brand event. A player who goes viral in October is repriced in November, not in advance.
- It is less certain for some players than others. termiNIL attaches a confidence level to every valuation. High-snap starters with verified social accounts are high confidence. Freshmen who have never played are not, and the model says so rather than hiding it.
How to read a termiNIL number
Read it as a price, not a paycheck — what the market would pay, not what someone did pay. Read the confidence flag, because a low-confidence estimate is a range wearing a point estimate's clothes. And read it relative to peers rather than in isolation: the most useful question is rarely "is this number right" but "is this player priced above or below the players he is competing with for the same money."
